The Accident
In the poem “The Accident” by Erica Funkhouser, she suggests that the husband is cheating on his wife, through subtle suggestions in the description of the scene. The four stanzas explain the encouraging, casualness and comfort, understanding and last, the desperate.
The first stanza suggests how the neighbor’s son suffered by the accident with the delivery van, and nothing serious happened. She was tranquil after all. The tone of encouraging means she is expectant to tell the news to the husband.
In the second stanza the tone of casualness and comfort means how the neighbor was so comfortable in the husband’s house. She came, sat down in a chair, and straight her legs, like if this was her own house. She comported like a family member, doing whatever she wanted.
At the third stanza, the tone understanding means everything. Now the husband’s wife understood what was happening between her husband and the neighbor. The neighbor just answered “yes” to the question the wife did’t ask. The neighbor had unspoken connections with the husband, because she knew all his habits, like how he cooks.
The last stanza explains the desperate tone. The husband was so nervous. The secret that maybe was supposed never be reveled, now everybody knows. He was trembling. His hand was shaking. He was doing actions that he never did before.
The conclusion of all four stanzas ends with the main idea. With evidences, we see that the husband was cheating on his wife with the neighbor.
